Apple is reshaping the in-car experience once again. If you're currently using CarPlay or planning to upgrade these are the key developments making headlines in June 2025.
1. Video Streaming Comes to CarPlay (iOS 26 Update)
Apple has confirmed that video playback via AirPlay will arrive with iOS 26. Drivers will be able to stream content from apps like Apple TV+ and YouTube directly to the CarPlay screen. However, this feature will only be available when the vehicle is parked and if the car manufacturer supports it.
This update is designed with safety in mind, so playback will automatically disable while driving.
2. Smart Display Zoom for Wide Screens
Smart Display Zoom is a new CarPlay feature designed to improve interface scaling across ultrawide dashboards. If your car has an unusually shaped display, CarPlay will now automatically adjust and optimize the layout.
Expect better visibility, improved navigation controls, and a cleaner, more intuitive design.
3. Liquid Glass UI Redesign
Apple is rolling out a major visual update to CarPlay that mirrors the iOS 26 design language. Known as the “Liquid Glass” UI, this update includes translucent elements, redesigned icons, and smoother animations.
Widgets are now more useful than ever, displaying live updates for navigation, calendar events, and vehicle data (where supported).
4. Compact Call Notifications and Message Tapbacks
To minimize distractions, incoming calls now appear in a compact banner rather than taking over the entire CarPlay screen. Apple is also adding support for message Tapbacks, allowing you to respond to iMessages with emoji reactions similar to iPhone.
This is a smart update for drivers who want to stay connected without losing focus.
5. CarPlay Ultra Rolls Out in Premium Vehicles
CarPlay Ultra, Apple’s most advanced in-car software experience, is now available in select luxury models. It offers full-screen app displays, integrated vehicle controls like climate and seat adjustment, and enhanced access to vehicle data.
Currently available in:
-
Aston Martin DB12
-
Select 2025 models from Genesis, Porsche, and Mercedes-Benz
More vehicle announcements are expected in the coming months.
6. Automaker Adoption Is Increasing Slowly
Despite the excitement, not all carmakers are moving quickly to support the latest CarPlay features. Licensing costs, interface customization, and regulatory requirements have slowed adoption.
Luxury brands are leading the way, and broader integration is expected throughout 2025 and into 2026.
