Another Big App on CarPlay: Claude Now Available for All Users

The number of AI chatbots available for CarPlay users keeps growing, and this time it’s a major release from none other than Anthropic.

We all knew this was supposed to happen eventually, so yes, Claude is now live on CarPlay. Users first spotted the app in their cars some time ago, but it looks like Claude on CarPlay has now reached general availability.

There has been no major official announcement from Anthropic, but at first glance, Claude can now be used from the CarPlay home screen just like the other chatbots that have already landed on Apple’s phone projection platform, including ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Due to the limitations set by Apple, the only way to launch a third-party chatbot is by tapping its icon on the CarPlay app screen. This obviously isn’t the most convenient and, more importantly, safest method for a driver whose main responsibility is to keep their eyes on the road. For now, wake-up commands are not available for third-party chatbot apps.

This makes Siri AI the only fully integrated chatbot with hands-free activation. Apple’s new-generation Siri is expected to arrive for iPhone and CarPlay users with the release of the next major iOS update.

Claude Comes to CarPlay

When you launch the Claude app on CarPlay, you get a hands-free conversation screen, meaning you can interact with the AI without touching the display once the app has been opened. That initial step, however, where you tap the Claude icon on the CarPlay home screen, is mandatory due to Apple’s current CarPlay limitations.

Once you’re inside the app, you can resume conversations you’ve already started or begin a new interaction. The application also displays various visual effects when you interact with Claude, providing visual feedback to let you know when the conversation is underway.

Otherwise, you can use Claude on CarPlay for pretty much the same types of interactions available on your iPhone. The app responds to your prompts with spoken answers, allowing you to continue a conversation naturally as long as Claude remains active.

For drivers, this means Claude can be used for questions, general information, brainstorming, and other hands-free interactions without having to pick up the iPhone while driving.

Apple Is Expanding AI on CarPlay

Apple added support for third-party chatbots to CarPlay as part of the iOS 26.4 release that went live on iPhones earlier this year. Siri, however, still doesn’t offer the same level of AI-powered interaction, remaining relatively limited when it comes to hands-free conversations.

That is expected to change with the next generation of Siri.

Siri will use AI capabilities integrated with Gemini, Google’s AI-powered assistant. It will also support a wake-up phrase, meaning users will be able to interact with it without first tapping an icon on the CarPlay home screen.

The new AI features are already available for testing as part of the beta builds of iOS 27, with the rollout expected to begin later this month.

Claude vs. Siri AI on CarPlay

The arrival of Claude is another sign that Apple is gradually turning CarPlay into a more capable platform for AI assistants. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and now Claude give users more options, but third-party apps still have an important limitation: they cannot be launched using a voice wake-up command.

That gives Siri a significant advantage once Apple rolls out its new AI-powered assistant.

For CarPlay users, the bigger picture is clear. AI is becoming an increasingly important part of the in-car experience, and Apple is opening CarPlay to more third-party assistants while working on its own deeper Siri integration.

As more AI apps arrive on CarPlay, the platform is moving beyond traditional navigation, music, and messaging features and becoming a much more capable extension of the iPhone.
