Tutorial: Carplay installation in a BMW 5 Series E61
In this tutorial, we will see how to install a Carplay in a BMW 5 series E61.
In fact, the only difficulty (or not) will be to get to the station, here it is a CCC.
So we chose the material accordingly: Carplay for BMW with CCC.
WHAT IS A CCC?
A BMW CCC is a GPS car radio of the Bavarian brand BMW with a small or large screen that can be controlled with the wheel, the famous Idrive.
It is presented in the following form:
The menu is in 5 distinct parts:
- Climate: ventilation, air conditioning, etc.
- Communication: the bluetooth
- Navigation: the GPS (PS: not all CCC car radios have the GPS function, yes, it exists unfortunately)
- Entertainment: it's the Media/Sources part
- i: Information, for the settings and the state of the vehicle
Here is the disassembly procedure to access the CCC:
Time: 20-30 minutes
Required hardware: a plastic spatula (or a flathead screwdriver will do) and a Phillips screwdriver.
This is the system that precedes the CIC system which is younger.
We'll start by removing the ventilation, first on the right.
Then the one on the left.
The connector must then be removed from the vent.
Here is the result when the ventilation is removed.
Then, 2 screws to remove.
The CCC station is finally visible.
Finally take out the post - very easy, no force required.
Protect the gearshift lever, especially if it is an automatic gearbox, as it returns to the starting position (in P) each time, thus risking damaging the leather of the knob.
1 - Power connector (Quadlock)
2 - video connector (LVDS)
The only "difficulty" is in the disassembly, for the connection, it is enough to use the 2 sockets mentioned 1 and 2.
We remind here the Carplay module to add to benefit from Apple Carplay on this BMW E61: Carplay for BMW with CCC.
