Carplay installation tutorial on BMW 1 Series E87

In this tutorial we will see how to install Apple Carplay on a BMW E87 with a CIC version.

Required equipment: a cross-headed screwdriver

Installation time: 30-40 minutes

Inventory: Carplay module and wiring.
So we count the module, a wifi antenna, 2 LVDS (video) cables, the power cable, the sound cable, and a USB cable (you don't have to connect it if you use the device wireless).

STEP 1: DISASSEMBLE THE CAR RADIO

We will start by unclipping the plastic cover.

In a second step, take out the air-conditioning control, you have to take out the black and white connectors.

Then remove the plastic cover.

There are 2 screws to unscrew (those which maintain the CIC car radio)

STEP 2 : REMOVAL OF THE IDRIVE WHEEL

To have more facility for the continuation, it is necessary to unclip (very simple) the plastic support of the gearshift (if it is a manual box then pull on the leather part).

Unclip the Idrive joystick as well.

Once in hand, you can see the single connector on the joystick. Unplug it.

And plug it back into the provided socket. There are deception devices, you can't go wrong.

Plug the kit connector back into the joystick socket. The purpose is simply to make a bypass.

STEP 3: CONNECTIONS

At the car radio station, identify the video socket of the station (it is pink).

Unplug this socket and then plug it into the female video socket of the kit.

The pink plug (male) of the kit is to be connected in place of the disconnected plug. (same, we make a by-pass for the video).

Connect LCD-IN and LCD-OUT as follows.

For the cable, no need to disassemble everything, just run the cable along the crossbar.

STEP 4 : ENJOY

Now you can test the Carplay by pressing the MENU button on the joystick for 2-3 seconds, it will switch to the Carplay interface. (first start)
